Kykao is a craft microbrewery in the Achaia region (northwestern Peloponnese). It was started by a group of friends who were enthusiastically home brewing for 15 years before starting their operation.
The name is inspired by an alcoholic drink made in ancient times, the Kykaeon, which was a wild, psychoactive brew created spontaneously through the mixture of various herbs, wild yeasts and other ingredients. Kykaeon was traditionally drunk after many days of fasting during the climax of the most famous secret rite of ancient Greece, the “Eleusinian Mysteries.” The word is still used in modern Greek to describe turmoil and disorder.
The team behind Kykao has embraced this traditional beverage making spirit and process in order to create a modern take on these intense, vivid, almost psychedelic brews of ancient times!
